Red lipstick on my cheek Laughter from the alley She twists out of my reach I laugh but she is laughing harder There’s always something there to tell me Betty is a rocker! And she won’t slow down I know the world is large That’s one of Betty’s secrets My life is not too hard But she knows how to make it harder There’s always something there to tell me Betty is a rocker! And she won’t slow down Her candle burns at both ends but I hold the middle And I wouldn’t change her ‘cause that’s who she is When she is lonely I hold her for hours Betty is a rocker, I play guitar Betty is a rocker! Slept on the roof last night Woke up all jagged edges Don’t always treat her right Bad habits tend to make it harder There’s always something there to tell me Betty is a rocker! And she won’t slow down Her candle burns at both ends but I hold the middle And I wouldn’t change her ‘cause that’s who she is When she is lonely I hold her for hours Betty is a rocker, I play guitar

David works downtown He’s got bills to pay He’s got a wife at home He’s got a kid on the way He’s got a girl at the office She’s young and thin If it makes him happy, everybody wins Well, now he’s out for lunch But he’s unhappy again He never rolls with the punch When things do not go as planned He has a drink for the pleasure A drink for the pain A drink to forget he’s been drinking again Some things are better left unspoken Some things are better left unsaid Some things are better left unspoken But they always come out in the end Well now he’s working late On the office couch He’ll have hell to pay But he’ll work it out And it’s not quite worth it But it’s fun to do And it makes him happy for a minute or two Some things are better left unspoken Some things are better left unsaid Some things are better left unspoken But they always come out in the end The clock in the kitchen is losing time His dreams are unwinding as years go by Losing hope is like tearing the pages Out of a book you wanted to read someday Well meanwhile back at home His food is getting cold And his pregnant wife Is sitting all alone So she calls the office No one hears the phone She thinks about the child He’ll never know Some things are better left unspoken Some things are better left unsaid Some things are better left unspoken But they always come out Some things are better left unspoken Some things are better left unsaid Some things are better left unspoken But they always come out in the end Well, David works downtown

Well baby, you shoved me your pocket too deep to see the sun Well maybe I was lying in your bed making love, when I should have run It’s been three long years since you put me on the street I’m looking at you and you’re looking at me Well, time hits hard like you always said it would I gotta laugh, you’re not looking so good I’m gonna laugh at you, Caroline Laugh at you I’m gonna laugh at you, Caroline Laugh at you Well you were the one, so fast and thin Any game you played you always had to win Well look at you now with that frown upon your face Swinging your bubble butt all over the place I’m gonna laugh at you, Caroline Laugh at you I’m gonna laugh at you, Caroline Laugh at you Well baby, you shoved me your pocket too deep to see the sun Well maybe I was lying in your bed making love, when I should have run It’s been three long years since you put me on the street I’m looking at you and you’re looking at me Well, time hits hard like you always said it would I gotta laugh, you’re not looking so good I’m gonna laugh at you, Caroline Laugh at you I’m gonna laugh at you, Caroline Laugh at you I’m gonna laugh at you, Caroline Laugh at you I’m gonna laugh at you, Caroline Laugh at you

Well all the money…. is gone I woke up this morning and the money was gone I’m looking for an easy dollar, but I just can’t find me one And there’s no more days in the sun Well the women have figured me out I’ve been looking for an easy lover, but I just can’t find me one And there’s no more days in the sun Well it’s good-bye, good-bye to this town I’ve worn out my welcome and the party is gone There’s a knocking on my front door so I think it’s time to run And there’s no more days in the sun

The shapely ankle of fate was draped across my bed I was lying in her arms, and this is what she said Temptation draws me on into another perfect day The whole wide world is waiting there for me to play All right, you can call me up tonight I’m ready to play all night You look old enough Meet me on the corner of Love and Lust The Fender amplifier of sin had been turned up to ten When she walked into the room in that dress I was with the band She was greasy and sweaty inside, peaches and cream on top He plugged my guitar in and I could not stop, I could stop All right, you can call me up tonight I’m ready to play all night You look old enough Meet me on the corner of Love and Lust When I woke up this morning this morning was long gone I thought I was dreaming again, ‘cause I was having so much fun I’m hanging to the roof of the 55 Ford that passes for my life I hope somebody’s driving – I’m going 175 All right, you can call me up tonight I’m ready to play all night You look old enough Meet me on the corner of Love and Lust You can call me up tonight I’m ready to play all night You look old enough Meet me on the corner of Love and Lust

I got lost inside of myself tonight It's a game I play when I need to hide I thought of all that I should have done I just went limp and my heart went numb All night, I just couldn't think about it I know a lot about life, know a lot about love Know how to solve all your problems I know how to have a good time, how to dodge a good-bye But I don't know how to be true to myself Fell in love with a girl last night Had a beautiful smile that felt just right I got to thinking and I could not tell Maybe I was just in love with myself All night, I just couldn't sleep without her I know a lot about life, know a lot about love Know how to solve all your problems I know how to have a good time, how to dodge a good-bye But I don't know how to be true to myself And I said everything I believed... would make you like me I look inside myself and I see... I don't know my problem Thought I wrote a new song today I tried to play it and it slipped away I thought maybe the music died Left a great big hole cut out inside All night, I just couldn't sing without it I know a lot about life, know a lot about love Know how to solve all your problems I know how to have a good time, how to dodge a good-bye But I don't know how to be true to myself I know a lot about life, know a lot about love Know how to solve all your problems I know how to have a good time, how to dodge a good-bye But I don't know how to be true to myself

We agreed we were wrong for each other What the hell were we talking about? And it’s no mystery that we had our problems But was it you or was it me that wanted out? I’m trying to hard to be a perfect gentleman It’s getting too hard for me to let you go Trying too hard to be a perfect gentleman I walk too fast and I run too slow Now I’m lying here drunk on the carpet With my heart spilled all over my sleeve And I can’t understand why it’s over When neither one of us wanted to leave I’m trying to hard to be a perfect gentleman It’s getting too hard for me to let you go Trying too hard to be a perfect gentleman I walk too fast and I run too slow There’s a secret on the tip of my tongue I still feel ugly Is that the reason I find it so hard To let you love me Well there’s a letter that you wrote on the counter Had it a week haven’t opened it up It might say you love me, it might say it’s over I don’t know which answer scares me the most I’m trying to hard to be a perfect gentleman It’s getting too hard for me to let you go Trying too hard to be a perfect gentleman I walk too fast and I run too slow I’m trying to hard to be a perfect gentleman It’s getting too hard for me to let you go Trying too hard to be a perfect gentleman I walk too fast and I run too slow

I fall down, you fall down, that’s nothing new in this world It’s not enough to hit the ground – sometimes you’ve got to get up We all live with something, yeah… You’ve gone broke, and I’m still poor – it’s not like we’re much worse off You’re standing on the ledge again; it’s not always best to move forwards We all live with something, don’t we? We’re all hurting somewhere, aren’t we? We all live with something, don’t we? We’re all hurting somewhere, aren’t we? We’re all scared of something, oh… I make you laugh, you make me laugh… we take a taxi to the lakefront The beach is sand and broken glass; we walk around the larger pieces We all live with something, don’t we? We’re all hurting somewhere, aren’t we? We’re all scared of something bigger than fear We’re both glad that we’re both here Once upon another time life was easy to follow We’re standing on the beach at dawn as the purples and yellows enfold us We all live with something, don’t we? We’re all hurting somewhere, aren’t we? We’re all scared of something bigger than fear We’re both glad that we’re both here We all live with something, don’t we? We all live with something, don’t we? Don’t we? We all live with something…

Once there was sunshine in your eyes Now there are thunderclouds -- so what went wrong this time? Up all night trying to fight it out Caught between compromise and lover’s pride We never talk ‘til it’s too late It all builds up inside ‘til our worlds collide I never know just what to say When it seems silence is my only safe bet I don’t know why you say I’m not really trying I wish that you could see what’s really on my mind It’s six AM and there’s no hope The sun is coming up, it’s time to go to work We get this far and hit a wall You never change your mind, so why should I? I don’t know why you say I’m not really trying I wish that you could see what’s really on my mind I don’t know why you say I’m not really trying I wish that you could see what’s really on my mind After all, there’s a million other women Just as pretty, just as fun But every time I’m in love with someone The same thing happens, tell me what goes wrong We’re home but we’re not really safe A promise not to fight -- how long will it last? But lying naked in your arms I almost think fairy tales were made to last I don’t know why you say I’m not really trying I wish that you could see what’s really on my mind I don’t know why you say I’m not really trying I wish that you could see what’s really on my mind\ What’s really on my mind What’s really on my mind

Red House 11:51
There's a Red House over yonder. That's where my baby stays. Lord, there's a Red House over yonder, baby. Lord, that's where my baby stays. Well, I ain't been home to see my baby, In ninety nine and one half days. Wait a minute something's wrong here. The key won't unlock the door. Wait a minute something's wrong. Lord have mercy, this key won't unlock this door. Something's goin' on here. I have a bad bad feeling My baby don't live here no more. That's all right, I still got my guitar. Look out now! Well I might as well go back over yonder, Way back upon the hill. (That's what I'm gonna do.) Lord, I might as well go back over yonder, Way back down across the hill. 'Cause if my baby don't love me no more, I know her sister will.

The Bad Examples Chicago, Illinois

The Bad Examples burst on the Chicago rock scene in the early 90s, and extensive touring around America as well as hits in Europe established them as fan favorites and critical darlings. Their musically rich and lyrically resonant albums were at odds with the aesthetic of grunge, the industry "flavor of the day," and so mainstream success eluded them, but the band has remained true to their sound. ... more
