Dear David

about

Recorded at Waterdog Records, "Dear David" is a song originally written in the 90s, but lost in my piles of lyrics and unreleased songs. It surfaced during a Staycation streaming show, and I was struck by how much it resonated with me. We tackled it in the studio shortly after, and I'm thrilled to make it available finally.

lyrics

Dear David

Guess you had it all in hand this time
Dear David, dear David
Noone watching seemed to understand you really had their number
Came on like a fairy tale come true
So easy to believe it
The person most under the spell was you
You really were a true believer

All of your falling giants
All of your Queens of Egypt
All of your great expectations are
Letting you down again

Don’t blame yourself for what was meant to be, dear David
The knife is never guilty of the deed
Somebody’s hand was on it

All of your falling giants
All of your Queens of Egypt
All of your great expectations are
Letting you down again

All of your higher meanings
All of your hieroglyphics
All of your high and mighty friends are
Letting you down again, dear David…

They’re promising something vague
And leaving us holding the bag
Hung up on the electric fence
When the power comes on again
When will it stop making sense to you my friend?

I guess you had it all in hand this time
Dear David, dear David
I never noticed any sleight of hand
You really were a wonder
Who knew that backroom deals would be so easy to come by?
How lucky no one’s blood was left behind
Except what was spilled of mine

All of your higher meanings
All of your hieroglyphics
All of your high and mighty friends are
Letting you down again

All of your falling giants
All of your Queens of Egypt
All of your great expectations are
Letting you down again, dear David, dear David

The Bad Examples Chicago, Illinois

The Bad Examples burst on the Chicago rock scene in the early 90s, and extensive touring around America as well as hits in Europe established them as fan favorites and critical darlings. Their musically rich and lyrically resonant albums were at odds with the aesthetic of grunge, the industry "flavor of the day," and so mainstream success eluded them, but the band has remained true to their sound. ... more
